Though the exact number of applications the BCCI has received is unknown, it has been discovered that WV Raman, the former India batter serving as head coach for India women from December 2018 to May 2021, also underwent interviews.
After returning to the team as mentor in November 2023, the BCCI—which had set May 27 as the deadline for applications for the post—had informal talks with Gambhir during IPL 2024, when he helped the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third title.
Gambhir’s second coaching appointment was with KKR; he had mentored the Lucknow Super Giants during the 2022 and 2023 IPL seasons, enabling the team to qualify for the playoffs both times.
Gambhir had asked for time to make a last call during the IPL, but on June 1, he spoke at an event in Abu Dhabi, stating he wanted to coach India. “Look, I would love to coach the Indian team,” Gambhir declared. “There is no greater honor.” Coaching your national team is the greatest honor available. You speak on behalf of 140 crore Indians here. And more generally as well, worldwide. And how could it get more than that when you represent India?”
